Police said the victim was 25-year-old Shaneku McCurty, who fought back during an attempted robbery.

They told Channel 2 Action News McCurty drove to the Chevron gas station on Redan Road after work around 1 a.m. She went inside to buy a few things and when she came back out, several men were outside waiting to steal her car and jumped her, according to police.

According to officers, McCurty resisted and fought back and that was when the gunman shot her several times.

McCurty died at the hospital.

The shooters got away but never took the victim's car.

DeKalb County Police Chief Dr. Cedric Alexander said McCurty was just an innocent victim who was trying to do good in the community.

"She is just an innocent person who drives up in to a store. [She] gets out, walks in, makes her purchase and comes back to her vehicle," Alexander said. "She offered something to this community, doing good trying to make something good for someone else."

Alexander said this case is disturbing because of randomness of the crime.

"What is most heartbreaking in this case ... it's so random, so violent, so unnecessary without cause of any nature"

The suspects arrived at the location prior to the shooting in what we believe to be a white 2003-2007 Nissan or Infiniti.
