DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — DeKalb police have charged a man with murder after a fight during the custody exchange of a 4-year-old boy turned deadly.
Police have not released the identity of the man taken into custody, but relatives of a woman involved said he is the new boyfriend of the mother involved in the custody exchange.
The new girlfriend of the child's father was killed and the father's sister was wounded in the altercation, Channel 2's Tony Thomas reported.
Police said they were called to 3012 River Road around 4 p.m. Sunday regarding shots fired. When they arrived, the women were already hit by gunfire and the shooter had fled the scene.
He was captured a short time later in some nearby woods.
The maternal grandmother of the child arrived to try and determine what had happened to her 22-year-old daughter, who she said is pregnant with her new boyfriend.
"I just can't believe this happened," Brenda Flagg said. "My daughter, Ashley, and her boyfriend came up and shot up her ex-boyfriend's house."
DeKalb Police Lt. Paul Braun will only confirm it began as a "domestic incident."
"His new girlfriend got shot in the head and one of his sisters got shot in the arm," Flagg added as she waited for more information.
Witnesses said the dispute all started when the two boyfriends began fighting during the custody exchange.
"I didn't raise my kids like this. I never thought this would happen," Flagg said.
At first, Flagg thought her daughter had been arrested in connection with the shooting, but later DeKalb police said she had only been taken in for questioning.
"I hope this is a wakeup call for her. She has a four year old son," Flagg said.
