Woman charged in $35K scam

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — A woman was charged in a scam that left an 82-year-old out of $35,000.

Sandy Springs police confirmed that Sophie Lorene Adams surrendered at the Fulton County Jail on Tuesday night.

Police said Adams told the man she needed the money for cancer treatments, but the cancer story was untrue.

"She was real sweet and real nice to me," the victim told Channel 2's Mike Petchenik on the condition of anonymity.  "I thought she was an honest person."

He told Petchenik he met Adams at a Kroger store off Roswell Road earlier this month and she befriended him.

"My wife died four years ago and I'm beginning to feel lonely," he said.

Officials at the victim's bank became suspicious and contacted police about large money transfers and the circumstances surrounding them.

Police are looking into whether Adams is involved in any other fraud cases.
