Wholesale gasoline prices dropping in Ga.

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Gas prices in metro Atlanta have slowly dropped, passing a crucial barrier on Thursday.

Channel 2 consumer investigator Jim Strickland learned that the average wholesale price for gasoline at the Doraville fuel terminals slipped under $3 for the first time in two months.

The price reflects the cost of gasoline before taxes and transport to local convenience stores. One month ago the wholesale price was $3.26 per gallon, which put the average price at the gas pump at $3.89 in metro Atlanta.

The trend is really the opposite of what drivers usually see in May because of anticipated demand for summer travel, according to the Automobile Association of America.

It's good news because we're seeing those prices running in the opposite direction," AAA senior travel manager Garrett Townsend told Strickland.

The average price for regular unleaded in metro Atlanta is $3.66 per gallon according to AAA, 22 cents below this time last year.

Drivers at a Walmart in Suwanee told Strickland they're skeptical.

"I think with the holiday weekend they'll go up. I think with summer's increase in travel they'll probably go up again," Crystal Dininger said.
