What to do if you have travel plans in Irma's path

ATLANTA — Do you have travel plans that are in the path of Hurricane Irma? Channel 2 consumer adviser Clark Howard has some advice when dealing with delays or cancellations from airlines, hotels or cruise lines.

1. Do not cancel your flight too early

Howard said the airlines are accommodating to a certain extent.

“They will give you a credit that you can use almost like a gift certificate for future travel,” Howard said. “Wait till the day before. Once an airline chooses to cancel your flight it’ll be your option to either get a full refund of your ticket or the credit for future travel.”

2. What do you do if your cruise is canceled

“You will get your money back plus a credit, typically 25-50 percent off a future cruise booking,” Howard said.

3. If you’re booked at a resort, you may be out of luck!

“The big problem is resorts. Resorts choose to do what they choose to do. Some keep your money anyway even if they’re not open, particularly outside the United States.”

4. Should I get trip insurance?

“Trip insurance can be very limiting. Sometimes you’ll buy trip insurance and if there is a named storm it’s not covered. Other times that is a perfectly included event. If you want to prepare for every possibility with travel, buy a trip policy. It costs more but it allows you to cancel for any reason without limitations by the insurer,” Howard said.
