Weapons arsenal seized in meth ring bust

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Channel 2 Action News has learned drug enforcement officers seized nearly 30 weapons and arrested six people in a crackdown on an alleged multimillion-dollar methamphetamine distribution ring that has international ties.

Investigators from the Dawson and Forsyth County sheriff's offices and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation executed search warrants at four homes Wednesday as part of a yearlong, multiagency investigation.

"This particular group brought in excess of 200 pounds of meth to this area alone. Street value estimated at $4 [million] to $5 million," said Forysth County Sheriff Duane Piper.

Piper said the investigation is continuing, so he could not release the names of those taken into custody.

Channel 2's Tom Regan went to one neighborhood in Forsyth County were authorities raided a home.

"It's a really nice area. I'm shocked something like would have happened," said resident Chris Panagopolis.

Regan also spoke with the mother of one woman who was taken into custody after their home was searched. She said her daughter was not involved in criminal activity.

"My daughter doesn't have anything to do with it. It was the guy she was seeing, and she got kind of involved with him," said Jodie Cowan.

The Forsyth County sheriff said he anticipates additional arrests.
