"We’ve been having that problem. I’ve been here three years that smell been here,"
According to Rockdale County officials, the apartment complex was not maintaining its lift station.
Instead officials tell us that 4 feet of grease and debris had built up over time clogging the pumps and causing raw sewage to overflow into a nearby stream. That’s when the Rockdale water resources shut off the water Tuesday, ordering repairs immediately, and the environmental protection division got involved.
When Channel 2's Christian Jennings called the leasing office and asked to speak to either a manager or the owner, she was told someone would call her back. That call never came.
When she went to talk to someone in person, the office was closed and this note was on the door.
A spokesperson with the Environmental Protection Division says it's too soon say whether the apartment complex will be fined.
They aren't sure how long the sewage had been spilling into Almand Creek nearby.
