Murders of 2 men over dirt bike could be gang-related, sheriff says

WALTON COUNTY, Ga. — The 16-year-old accused of ambushing two men will remain in jail without bond.

Channel 2 Action News is choosing not to name the alleged shooter until he's charged as an adult. His 17th birthday is in 11 days.

His family left the courthouse without a saying a word, but Channel 2's Chris Jose did speak to the victims' mothers.

“We're just glad they didn't give him no bail. No bail,” mother Angela Harris said.

Harris is relieved her son's accused killer will stay behind bars.

On Sunday, she was in tears when we met outside her home in Meriwether County.

Sheila White was there too, holding her son's picture.

"We're praying for strength,” White said.

On Monday, she held back the tears as she talked about her son, Cortez White.

In May, White and Smack Harris were shot execution-style when they drove from Meriwether County to Social Circle to sell a dirt bike that White posted online.

“Oh my God, he's very young to have done this to these two boys,” White said.

Cameras were not allowed inside the courtroom, but the DA took out a stack of files and laid out the teen's lengthy record.

Jose has learned he's been arrested for theft and making terroristic threats.

"I was very shocked that he had a record that long,” White said.

The defense said the 16-year-old admits he was a part of the bike transaction, but not the actual shooting.

Investigators say there could be other people involved, but they believe the teenager pulled the trigger.

In court, it was revealed that the gun is still missing. The sheriff told Jose his deputies are searching for that gun, and this double murder could be gang-related.
