Video shows attack of middle school student

POLK COUNTY, Ga. — A student suffered a minor concussion when she was allegedly assaulted by another student in her classroom at Rockmart Middle School in Polk County.

The student, 12-year-old Jie Holmes, told Channel 2's Tom Regan the other student planned the attack last Thursday and alerted other students to stand by the doorway to watch.

"She just grabbed me by the throat and threw me back. She was trying to swing at me. She threw me on the ground and my head hit the wall," said Holmes.

Holmes said the attack was unprovoked. The girl's mother said the school did not notify her about the incident, which she learned about from the parent of another child.

"She tried to defend herself, but the girl was so big there was nothing she could do," mother Gwen Holmes said.

Another student took cellphone video of the attack and sent it to Jie. A teacher was in the room at the time.

Gwen Holmes said the teacher should have stepped in sooner to stop the attack.

'It could have been my child's life. I had to take her to the emergency room. She was complaining about headaches," said Gwen Holmes.

Polk County Superintendent Dr. William A. Hunter told Regan the student who instigated the fight and another student who took the video were suspended.

The video has been turned over to police for a possible follow-up investigation.

"We respond to every allegation of bullying and take appropriate action when there is evidence that bullying has occurred. There was no report of bullying prior to this incident," said Hunter.

The girl and her mother plan to ask administrators to transfer the student allegedly started the fight.

'She is terrified about going back to school," Gwen Holmes said of her daughter.
