PALMETTO, Ga. — Mike Dishman has given his everything for his community for 28 years. Now, he’s asking for a little back during the fight of his life.

He and his family are in desperate need of financial assistance.

Dishman was on duty for the last time July 15. He left work that day with a stomach and backache and what he thought was the flu. Four days later he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.

"Be careful with what you've got, with what time you do have. You never know when time will run out," Dishman said.

He and his wife, Belinda, said the community of Palmetto has rallied around them, donating their own sick time so he won’t lose pay, but they say the bills are mounting and adding more stress to an already stressful situation.

They are afraid they may lose their house as Mike battles cancer.

"I look at him every day not knowing if something might happen and look at him and think this may be the last time we get to go to church together,” Belinda said.

Mike Dishman has gone through two rounds of chemotherapy, with six more to go.

He said his long-term prognosis is uncertain.

"God's not finished with me yet. He's go work for me to do," he said.

The wife of another police officer has set up a go fund me page to help officer Dishman with his recovery.
