Chicken truck overturns on icy road

GILMER COUNTY, Ga. — A tractor-trailer transporting more than 1,000 chickens to a processing plant skidded on an ice-covered bridge in Gilmer County and overturned Friday.

The crash happened just outside downtown Ellijay on Old Highway 5. An unknown number of chickens were killed in the crash, and the driver suffered slight injuries, according to authorities at the scene.

"The bridge is frozen over. The driver lost control and overturned, and we wound up with this," said Elijay Fire Department Chief Sam West.

West told Channel 2's Tom Regan the driver suffered minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital.

Freezing rain fell throughout Gilmer and Pickens counties, making driving treacherous.

"It's the back roads and the steep mountain roads that you really have to be worried about," said driver Rhonda Wallace.

The Georgia Department of Transportation sent trucks to spread an ice melt mixture on rural roads and bridges.
