Fire destroys woman's home on birthday

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. — A 73-year-old woman who buried her husband on her birthday two years ago is now dealing with another tragedy on her birthday this year.

Eva Childers lost the home she built with her late husband 56 years ago. Fire ripped though it Saturday on her birthday.

Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the fire.

Childers told Channel 2's Sophia Choi she and her family were celebrating in Dawsonville when the fire happened.

"Time we got up there, the neighbors called and said my house was burning," Childers said.

Childers said she's just glad she, her son and granddaughter who live at the home were gone at the time.

"I just don't want nobody hurt. It's hard to give up family," she said.

Childers said she knows a lot about losing family after burying her husband two years ago on her birthday.

At that same time, she said her grandson killed his own brother.  Pickens County deputies said Wilburn "Doby" Childers confessed to the slaying of his brother, Charles Wayne Childers.

Mrs. Childers said with so much tragedy happening on her birthdays, she's scared to have another one.

"I don't know, I don't want to have anymore. Maybe it'll finish me off next time," she said.

Childers said her insurance plan will assist her during the rebuilding process.
