Thursday to begin series of wet days for metro Atlanta

Line of showers and storm move into metro Atlanta Thursday night into Friday morning.

ATLANTA — A system of rain currently over central Alabama will make its way into north Georgia late Thursday night and early Friday morning.

Severe Weather Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Glenn Burns expects those showers will start to cross the state line beginning around 11 p.m.

“Then the showers and the thundershowers roll across the area during the overnight hours and for the morning commute at 5 a.m., just a few lingering showers mainly along and to the east of Interstate 85,” Burns said.

Burns said lows will stay in the high 50s Friday morning, despite the rain. The average low for Friday is 34 degrees.

“It is likely we will see day nine of consecutive 70 degree-plus temperatures during the month of January, which will set an all-time record for the date,” Burns said.

The showers will move out early in the morning and it will be partly cloudy for the remainder of the day, Burns said.

Beginning Saturday morning, showers are expected to move in to the metro by 9 a.m., covering most of north Georgia.

“Then the showers and thundershowers pretty much exit the area by lunch hour,” Burns said.

The clouds will move out and will be clear for the remainder of the day.

“The greatest risk for severe thunderstorms Saturday will be in a line near Rome, the northern suburbs of Atlanta and down toward the Walton County area, just to the west of Eatonton,” Burns said.

Burns said strong, gusty wind will be the greatest concern Saturday.

There is also an 80 percent chance of showers on Sunday, before clearing out Monday morning.
