3 months after tornado, city of South Fulton residents struggle to rebuild

SOUTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Tuesday marked exactly three months since a devastating tornado caused millions of dollars in damage in a south Fulton County neighborhood.

Many homeowners told Channel 2's Nefertiti Jaquez they're not getting the help they need to recover.
"I wish everybody was home. I wish to not look up the streets and see blue tarps," neighbor Sophia Bellony said. "It really hurts because I miss my neighbors."

Bellony told Jaquez she was spared, but she misses all her neighbors along Jumpers Trail who were displaced when a tornado ripped through their subdivision three months ago.

“Insurance companies are not complying, contractors aren’t complying,” Bellony said. “Nothing has been done to their homes and it’s been three months.”

She isn’t the only one frustrated.

Mike Landrum and his family were forced out of their home when the storm destroyed everything they worked hard to build.

“I thought we would be finished with everything,” Landrum said.

Crystal Shaw told Jaquez that she and her family have been living at a hotel this entire time.

Shaw and many others feel like city and state officials should be doing more to help residents who have lost everything, especially those who are struggling financially.

“What can we do to make it easier for our community?” Shaw asked.

But while the tornado caused severe damage, city leaders confirmed to Jaquez that the storm didn’t fit the criteria to be considered a state or federal disaster, which would bring in relief funds.

For now, the residents along Jumpers Trail say they are on their own.

“It’s heartbreaking because we are a close-knit community,” Bellony said.
