Temperatures to dip below freezing again tonight

Temps feel like they are between 5 above to 5 below zero, Karen Minton says.

ATLANTA — Much of north Georgia got a break from the freezing weather as temperatures reached near 40 degrees -- but Severe Weather Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Glenn Burns said we'll be very cold again tonight.

Severe Weather Team 2 has the timing of when the metro Atlanta area could see temperatures in the 60s, on the Channel 2 Action News Nightbeat at 11 p.m.

The Georgia Department of Transportation urged drivers to use caution if they have to get onto the roads.

"While conditions have improved on interstates, surface streets are still iced over and too hazardous for travel," Georgia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Natalie Dale said.

Some school districts have decided to close for a third day Friday, citing dangerous road conditions.

Burns said temperatures will fall below freezing again Thursday night, presenting the risk for a refreeze. That risk will be in effect both Friday and Saturday mornings.

On Saturday afternoon, temperatures will climb above freezing and stay above freezing through the weekend, topping out in the low 60s on Sunday, Burns said.

What viewers can only get on Channel 2 Action News:

  • Updated hour-by-hour temperature forecast showing temperatures climbing into the 40s this afternoon and falling below freezing again tonight.
  • Updated weekend forecast showing temperatures climbing into the 50s & 60s.
  • Tracking our next cold front – when rain and storms could impact your plans.

Showers and storms will be widespread Monday in association with our next cold front but, Burns said, temperatures will stay well above freezing.

Air behind that front, while cold, will be seasonable, with afternoon highs in the lower 50s through midweek.
