Teen charged in drive-by shooting on basketball court

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A Gwinnett County teenager is accused of firing 15 to 20 shots into a crowd of teens playing basketball at a Buford apartment complex.

Police say two groups of teens had been quarreling in recent weeks that lead up to the shooting.

"There were quite a few people out there, not exactly in the path of the shooting but around it when this occurred," said Gwinnett Police Cpl. Jake Smith.

Smith told Channel 2's Tom Regan a black Volvo pulled up to the court at the Reserves at Ivy Creeks apartments off Mall of Georgia Boulevard Sept. 20. Police say a 17-year-old identified as Carrington Frye pointed a gun out of the rear passenger window and opened fire on the basketball players.

Police say it is remarkable only one person was hit and suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg. Frye, who was arrested Monday, if charged with five counts of aggravated assault.

"It was very dangerous act. The suspect is fortunate no one was hurt worse that he was," Smith said.
