Standoff prompts evacuations at Gwinnett apartment complex

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Some residents in a Gwinnett County apartment complex were evacuated Saturday morning as police worked to safely negotiate with a woman threatening suicide.

The incident was reported shortly after 9 a.m. at the Park Crossing Apartments.

Gwinnett police said they evacuated a few units in the 2700 block of Park Crossing Way.

"Before the SWAT team was fully in place, the woman fired a round inside the residence. It was not believed that the shot was aimed at police or others, but may have been accidental or a warning shot," Gwinnett Police Cpl. Troy Tobler said in a news release.

The SWAT team was able to convince the woman to exit the apartment at about 11:15 a.m.

Police then took her to Gwinnett County Jail. Charges are pending, but police said their primary focus is to get the woman mental health assistance.
