I-85S reopens after suspicious package investigation

ATLANTA — All lanes of Interstate 85 southbound were shut down for more than two hours while Atlanta police investigated a suspicious package report.

The interstate was shut down at the Cheshire Bridge Road exit shortly before 9 a.m. Saturday, but reopened around 11:15 a.m.

Atlanta police said a bag they were checking out turned out not to be a threat.

"Our SWAT units responded and were able to determine that the bag was of no threat and contained a number of small empty boxes," Atlanta police spokesman John Chafee told Channel 2 Action News.

Several suspicious package reports have kept the Atlanta police bomb squad busy this week in the wake of Monday's Boston Marathon bombing, but the reports have been false alarms.
