Police: Man stole kid's bike to try to get away

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Sandy Springs police want to know if a man who crashed a car, then stole a kid's bike to get away, might also be behind identity theft.

Dashcam video showed the seconds after police said Dalvin Prince and an accomplice crashed their car at Georgia Route 400 and Northridge Road last Thursday.

"One of our traffic officers was working traffic out on 400 near Pitts Road, observing people using the flex lane after hours," Sandy Springs police Sgt. Sam Worsham told Channel 2's Mike Petchenik  "He observed a blue Volkswagon in the flex lane going northbound, so he went to go stop the vehicle."

Worsham said the car’s driver refused to stop, then lost control and crashed into the tree.  Dashcam video showed two men get out of the car and run into some nearby woods.  Police said Prince stole a kid’s bike from a nearby home and tried to get away on it.

"I heard a noise, and it wasn't a knocking noise, and no one rang the doorbell," said witness John Fischer.  "I looked out the kitchen window, because I could see the front door from the kitchen window, and I saw a 6-foot black male, riding a child's bike in the rain."

Fischer told Petchenik he called the cops, grabbed his gun and followed the cycling man down to street where police were waiting.

"He kept riding very leisurely, which is weird for someone who's wanted," said Fischer.  "He got about half way down the street, and he got in between me and a cop car, and that's when he decided to lay down and he just gave up, pretty much."

Police told Petchenik when they searched Prince's car, they found a number of troubling items that might explain why he was so eager to get away.

Suspect one of two

“In the vehicle, we were able to find a stolen Glock pistol, some cellphones, a laptop, Visa cards, as well as a credit card skimmer,” said Worsham. “It’s a device they can place either over an ATM or a gas card at a pump, and it’ll actually read credit card numbers.”

Worsham said investigators were getting search warrants to check the laptop to see how many potential identifications were stolen by the skimmer.  He said police were still searching for Prince’s accomplice.

Fischer said he was just doing what anyone should by helping the police find Prince.

“I, personally, feel I was doing my civic duty,” he said.
