Student shot walking to school

DeKalb police are investigating who shot a student as he walked home from high school.
Police said Zachius Shropshire, 17, was shot in the chest and back as he walked home from Redan High School on North Redan Circle in Stone Mountain. Witnesses told police a black car, possibly a Honda, sped toward Shropshire and friends when someone rolled down a window and fired two to three shots.
The teens ran off before Shropshire stopped and lay down in neighbor Artis Collins' yard. Collins told Channel 2's Amy Napier Viteri his daughter found the teen.
"She came out and actually saw him, the guy sitting out here, lying out here in the yard," Collins said.
Collins said a neighbor called the house after hearing gunshots.
"(I) asked her did she hear the shots and she said a guy got shot and he came up the street and fell in your guys' yard," Collins explained.
A friend of the teen victim, Anastasia Awadjie, told Viteri she normally walked home after school with Shropshire, but left school early that day for an appointment. Awadjie said Shropshire was still in the hospital. Neighbors who live near Shropshire said they haven't seen him since the shooting.
"He’s a good kid. He’s never been in any trouble and I was shocked when my husband told me. I was shocked,” neighbor Angela Morris said.
Awadjie, 14, said her parents now pick her up from school because they're concerned for her safety.
"Kids are brave you know," said her father, Jonathan Clark. "But we as parents we know better. The bullet doesn’t have a name. It could've been anybody."
Police are investigating the motive for the shooting.
