Storms cause damage across parts of metro Atlanta

Storms and heavy rain moved through metro Atlanta Monday night, leaving behind down trees and power lines in some areas.

The storms brought heavy rain, damaging wind gusts and lightning in the western sections of Georgia.

Damage

Several trees fell across metro Atlanta overnight and in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Crews are working to clear a large tree that fell onto a home on the 1000 block of Linwood Avenue in East Point.

Channel 2’s Audrey Washington saw the home was badly damaged.

She spoke to the homeowner who said he believes the huge tree knocked his house off of its foundation.

The tree crashed shortly before 4 a.m. Tuesday and landed directly onto the house and several cars.

The homeowner said he, his wife and four children were all inside at the time. They all escaped without injury.

At least three cars parked on the side of the road were damaged.

A large pine tree fell on a mobile home in Carrollton. One woman was taken to the hospital for observation.

Georgia Power crews worked overnight to restore power after a large tree brought down power lines in along Trailridge Drive in Dunwoody just before midnight.

Thousands of people were without power in south Georgia overnight.

Channel 2 Action News obtained photos of some of the storm damage in Albany that show trees that smashed cars and went through homes.

Flood watches/warnings

A Flood Warning was also issued for Pew Creek in Lawrenceville, affecting Gwinnett County until Friday at 12:36 a.m.

Looking ahead

Temperatures are expected to reach the mid 60s Tuesday afternoon ahead of a cold front.

"The Arctic air is finally going to get here by the end of the week," Severe Weather Team 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said.

The rest of the week will remain dry with temperatures in the 50s and 40s.

The next chance of rain comes Friday night into Saturday when temperatures could hover around freezing but will warm up into the 40s Saturday morning.
