South Georgia deputies searching for escaped inmate charged with child molestation, kidnapping

AMERICUS, Ga. — Deputies in south Georgia are on the lookout for an inmate that escaped from jail Sunday night.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office said Charlie Lester escaped from the Sumter County Jail in Americus. Lester is a Black man described as 6 feet, 2 inches tall and weighs approximately 250 pounds.

The sheriff’s office said Lester has several upper body and neck tattoos. Deputies says anyone who sees Lester should not approach him and call 911. Anonymous tips on Lester’s whereabouts can be made at 229-815-6721.

Lester was arrested in August on several charges, including rape, aggravated child molestation and kidnapping, according to Sumter County jail records.
