Police: Prowler faces slew of charges after shootout with officers

FAIBURN, Ga. — A man is in jail after a gun battle with police officers in a south Fulton County subdivision.

Channel 2's Darryn Moore learned officers received a call of a suspicious person on Meadow Glen Parkway in Fairburn early Friday morning.

A neighbor noticed a person walking in between houses and called 911. When two officers confronted him the man, he ran and started shooting at the officers.

"The officers returned fire. Neither the officers or the perpetrator were actually injured in the incident," said Fairburn Interim Chief Vernal Sutherland.

Police said the man put a fight when they caught him.

He has been identified as Louberto Babers. He is charged with two counts of aggravated assault on an officer, two counts of felony obstruction of an officer, loitering/prowling, theft by receiving stolen property, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and giving false information to officers. Police said the stolen property was the firearm he used to allegedly shoot at officers.

"The perpetrator was also struck with a Taser," Sutherland said.

Officers put paper bags on the suspect's hands to check for gun powder residue after finding a weapon.

"We do have that on the scene and we'll be processing it with the aid of the GBI," Sutherland said.

GBI agents and their crime scene investigators collected evidence and they're now in charge of the investigation.

Investigators canvassed the neighborhood checking to see if bullets pierced any homes or cars, so far they didn't find anything.
