Motorcyclist dies in wreck with MARTA bus

SOUTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Police are trying to determine what caused a man driving a motorcycle to slam directly into a MARTA bus.

The motorcyclist died in the crash.

MARTA officials said the motorcyclist was a 42-year-old man.

They said he was driving about 5:30 a.m. Thursday in the 4100 block of Washington Road when he crossed the middle line of the road and hit the MARTA bus head-on.

He was pinned under the bus and died at the scene.

"My first thought was to see if he was OK, was he moving. So I got out and asked, 'Are you OK?' And he was up under the bus and no response," witness Eddie Harris said.

The MARTA bus was carrying four passengers, none of whom reported injuries.

“Our buses are equipped with CCTV, so since the Georgia State Patrol is investigating at some point, we will turn that video over to them,” MARTA spokeswoman Alisa Jackson said.

The female driver of the bus was taken to Atlanta Medical Center South for mandatory testing, according to MARTA officials.

“He didn’t have any lights on on his bike, and that’s why she didn’t see him,” Harris said.

NewsChopper 2 was over the scene as Washington Road was shut down between Janice and Carmel drives.

Washington Road has since reopened.

The crash is under investigation.
