Community on edge over increasing violent crime

SOUTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Nearly 100 frustrated residents showed up to the Southwest Arts Center Thursday night to voice their concerns about the violent crimes being committed across South Fulton County.

After a string of car thefts, carjackings, break-ins and more, many people in the community feel uneasy.

“I got so much security in my home now I feel, it doesn’t feel good to feel like you’re living in Fort Knox,” Janette Phillips said.

Phillips was forced to get a new security system at her home when an armed man snuck up behind and tried to steal her car from her driveway.

She says the attempted carjacking has caused a fear she cannot escape.

“It’s hard to feel safe. That’s not a good feeling,” she said.

Fulton County leaders are working on several solutions to help curb the crime in the area.

“Those car thefts, the break-ins, the murders, the assaults—the problem is if you don’t put an end to it now it will fester,” Fulton County Commissioner Marvin Arrington said.

“I believe if Fulton County and the city of Atlanta are working together it gives us more resources to actually address the issue,” Atlanta City Council President Ceasar Mitchell said.

Arrington says he will take all of the solutions he heard at the meeting to the Board of Commissioners to further address crimes happening in the area. That meeting is set for Jan. 18.
