Slain police officer's widow gives birth to couple's 2nd child

HENRY COUNTY, Ga. — The widow of Locust Grove police Officer Chase Maddox gave birth Tuesday to the couple’s second child.

Channel 2 Action News has learned that Alex Maddox gave birth to a baby boy Tuesday. The boy was named Bodie Allen Maddox after his grandfather. Family friends say Alex and Bodie are both healthy.

Maddox died of a gunshot wound to the head, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, citing results of an autopsy conducted Saturday. The autopsy showed Maddox, 26, had been shot three times.

Maddox's funeral is scheduled for Feb. 17 at 11 a.m. at Glen Haven Baptist Church in McDonough. Alex Maddox has previously said she wants to attend Chase's funeral.

Locust Grove residents have been showing support for Officer Maddox and his family. Channel 2's Tyisha Fernandes visited the memorial where residents were in tears paying their respects.

Sherry Haynes told Fernandes she gets emotional because she remembers meeting him.

"He was in front of me over at the kangaroo and he turned around to do something and I said, 'Man, you guys are the most underpaid people besides school teachers.' He said, 'I know,' and he smiled and he said, 'You just wanna help, there’s no cost to help,'” Haynes said.

Even Mayor Robert Price couldn’t contain his emotions when he spoke about the baby and the rest of the Maddox family.

"If she says she needs something, we‘re gonna help as long as we’re here," he said.

Price said Friday was the worst day of his life.

"You know we’ll never forget. This ain't never gonna happen to me again, and we hope it don’t never happen to anybody in this town again," he said.

The family of Officer Maddox has set up a bank account to receive donations for his wife and children. You can drop off donations at any United Community Bank location and ask that it be deposited into “The Maddox Family Fund."
