MARIETTA, Ga. —

Dozens of residents of a Cobb County apartment building still cannot return home after a weekend rain caused a sinkhole.

There is a gap where the foundation of the Ivy Ridge Apartments on Bentley Road used to be.

Workers have been clearing away parts of the cinder block foundation to try to stabilize the 9-unit structure, but until then, residents cannot retrieve their belongings.

Sherry Smith Faye said she felt everything shake in her apartment, prompting her and her daughter to run out.

“I just left with what I had on. No way of replacing those things and I’m hoping we can get back in there, because we need clothing and other items that are in there,” Faye said.

The Red Cross has placed the 25 residents in a nearby hotel temporarily. Apartment management said they do not know when residents will be able to get in to retrieve their belongings.
