Storms bring damaging wind, large hail to metro Atlanta

ATLANTA — Severe storms brought damaging wind, intense lighting and large hail to north Georgia and metro Atlanta Tueday.

One line of storms hit north Georgia Tuesday afternoon, while a second line moved through metro Atlanta Tuesday night.

The main threats from the storms were damaging winds, large hail and intense lightning.

The rain and storms moved south and to the east Tuesday night.

Storms Tuesday afternoon brought hail up to 1.5 inches with a velocity up to 110 mph.

Georgia Power said there are nearly 174,000 outages across Atlanta and North Georgia Tuesday night.

Channel 2's Nefertiti Jaquez spoke to a man in Gordon County who had to stop and take cover during the storm.

Ryan Cooker pulled over at a gas station where the power was out.

"I've never really seen this before outside the tornado from a few years ago," he said.

He said his truck was swaying back in forth while driving because of the wind.

"I didn't want to take any chances," Cooker said.

Atlanta reached 85 degrees Tuesday afternoon, breaking the record high temperature of 84 degrees.

The next chance of rain comes this weekend.
