2 dead in wrong-way crash on I-85 in DeKalb County

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Channel 2 Action News has learned two people have died during a chase with Georgia State Troopers on Interstate 85 in DeKalb County.

The chase started on Buford Highway Thursday night when troopers tried to pull over a Saturn with three people inside for speeding. The car got onto I-85 south at Clairmont Road where troopers performed a pit maneuver.

“At some point the vehicle got onto the ramp from 85 south from at Clairmont Road. Near the top of the ramp, the trooper executed a pit maneuver,” said Georgia State Patrol Sgt. Stacey Collins.

A trooper ran toward the car and the driver sped off.

“Then the driver of the Saturn fled that scene. Drove the wrong way on I-85 south, so he drove northbound in the southbound lanes,” Collins said

Trooper did not pursue the driver onto I-85 south.

Investigators say the car then smashed head-on into a black Infiniti with Lisa Jackson, 52, of Alpharetta inside.

The driver and a second passenger in the Saturn died. Jackson suffered serious injuries.

“Two are deceased and one female was transported with serious injury to her head,” Collins said.

The woman in the Infiniti suffered minor injuries.

“She sustained minor injuries. She was conscious, up and walking around,” Collins said.

Lanes were blocked for several hours as authorities investigated the scene.

The state patrol is working on identifying those who died in the crash.
