Second deputy dies after ambush shooting in Peach County

A second deputy has died after an ambush shooting in Peach County.

PEACH COUNTY, Ga. — District Attorney David Cooke confirmed to Channel 2 Action News on Tuesday that the second deputy died.

The shooting happened near Hardison Road and Highway 42 in Byron around 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

GBI officials said a man was upset about neighbors riding four-wheelers in the area and confronted them with a weapon.

“Apparently, while they were doing that, the next door neighbor became agitated with them. He came out and confronted them with a weapon,” GBI Special Agent in Charge J.T. Ricketson said.

When deputies tried to talk with the suspect, identified as Ralph Elrod, agents said he opened fire.

Investigators said Elrod sprayed more than 50 bullets at deputies and officers outside the house.

Sgt. Patrick Sondron, 41, died at the scene.

Deputy Del Smallwood was taken to a hospital in critical condition, and later died..

Sondron's funeral is planned for Thursday in Warner Robins.

"We really believe that light and love are going to overcome all forms of darkness and hatred, and that's why we do what we do," Pastor Tom Carruth said.

Elrod was shot in the stomach.

He is charged with murder and assault.

According to Cooke, the GBI obtained warrants for Elrod Monday afternoon.

"The warrants allege Elrod committed aggravated assault against three City of Byron police officers by shooting at them with a firearm," Cooke said. "A fourth warrant alleges an additional count of aggravated assault on a peace officer for shooting Peach County Deputy Daryl Smallwood. And finally, a fifth warrant alleges one count of murder for shooting and killing Peach County Deputy Patrick Sondron. Of course, our thoughts and prayers are with the families of deputies Sondron and Smallwood."

Based on his review of the evidence and interviews with the GBI, Cooke said no charges will be filed against an officer who shot back in the incident.
