Search under way for retired surgeon who vanished

PICKENS COUNTY, Ga. — A retired surgeon who went for a walk in Pickens County has been missing for nearly a week.

Family members say Dr. Ben Thebaut, 79, went on a hike in the dense woods near his home on Sunday and vanished. He even waved to a neighbor before leaving.%

Search teams have looked every day for him, but there is growing concern with temperatures expected to drop into the 40s on Friday night.

Captain Kris Stancil of the Pickens County Sheriff's Office told Channel 2's Richard Elliot more than 100 search and rescue personnel from across the state will help with a search on Saturday.

They plan to blanket the woods on Saturday wearing bright orange and yellow. Deputies have asked volunteers to stay home because it is the first day of hunting season.

Stancil also added there are sinkholes, bears and even an old abandoned mine in the area.
