Robbery suspect dies in Gwinnett police-involved shooting

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — An armed robbery suspect, 24-year-old John Schneider, is dead after a police-involved shooting at a Wells Fargo bank in Gwinnett County.

The incident happened around 9 a.m. on Lawrenceville Highway near Bethesda Church Road.

For residents who live in the area, they said it was a scary situation.

Police said Schneider ran across the street to a church after the robbery. A Gwinnett County police officer found him hiding behind the church. A confrontation ensued and the suspect hit the officer in the head. Police said he was forced to shoot the suspect who died from a single-gunshot wound at the scene. The officer has since been released from the hospital.

Bethesda Church Road is closed between Lawrenceville Highway and Church Road as police continue their investigation.

Channel 2's Dave Huddleston is gathering more details at the scene where he said residents and police say this isn’t the first time the bank has been robbed.

Police are still looking for anything Schneider may have dropped like money, or even clothes.
