Heavy rain causes flooding across north Ga.; flash flood watch in effect for parts

Heavy rain, storms moving through north Ga.

ATLANTA — A line of heavy rain and storms moved through metro Atlanta most of Wednesday evening and night.

The showers started moving into northwest Georgia and became more widespread as the night went on, according to Severe Weather Team 2 meteorologist Katie Walls.

Some areas saw anywhere from 1-2 inches of rain, creating flooded roads. The flooding had traffic at a standstill on Northside Drive.

A flood warning is currently in effect for Crooked Creek near Norcross, affecting Fulton and Gwinnett counties.

Several school distircts have announced closings for Thursday, including Dade County Schools, Walker County Schools and Catoosa County Schools.

Severe Weather Team 2's chief meteorologist Glenn Burns said the rain has now pushed east of Atlanta. He said a cold front will be moving through in the overnight hours.

There will be some lingering showers into the Thursday morning commute. Burns said temperatures will reach the 40s Thursday, as opposed to the 60s many experienced Wednesday.

A flash flood watch is in effect for parts of north Georgia until 7 a.m. Thursday.

Behind the cold front, Walls said there will be a 40-degree cooldown by the weekend, with some areas waking up to lows in the 20s on Saturday.
