Rescue group gets dogs seized from alleged puppy mill

SOUTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — More than two-dozen dogs rescued from an alleged puppy mill are now getting help.

Fulton County Animal Control officers seized 38 bulldogs Monday from a warehouse on Commerce Circle. They also seized 52 lizards and a rabbit. The owner and an associate were arrested.

"It is so hard and it can break your heart time and time again when you see these dogs who are just neglected and mistreated," said Amanda Grantham, with Georgia English Bulldog Rescue.

The rescue group said 18 of the dogs will go to foster homes after being checked out by a veterinarian.

"It'll start off with heartworm checks. We're going to check for ear infections. We're going to be doing rabies checks. Each one of these dogs is going to have to be spayed and neutered," Grantham said.

The 20 other dogs are with another rescue group. Grantham said now the dogs are getting the tender care and attention they deserve.

"What we're going to do is put them in private foster homes, so that we can start to learn about these dogs, their dislikes, their personalities," she said.

Lifeline Animal Project said with the dogs in good care, there is now room for other dogs at the shelter.

The rescued dogs will eventually be adopted out, but that will be in at least three weeks.

"We want to make sure that we properly rehabilitate them so that we can really see all their needs and get them addressed before finding them the perfect home," Grantham said.

Rescuers said adoption will help shut down puppy mills.

"The more we adopt from shelters, the less these breeders will be in business and putting these animals in these deplorable conditions," said Heather Friedman, with Lifeline Animal Project.
