Report: Ex-football star confronts referee at son's game

ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell city officials said Tuesday that former University of Georgia football star Verron Haynes has been banned from coaching or attending his son's youth football games after an incident in which Alpharetta police were called to a game.

According to an incident report obtained by Channel 2's Mike Petchenik, Haynes stormed a field at Alpharetta's North Park Saturday to confront the referee.

Police said the incident started when Mike Robinson kicked Haynes' son out of a match against the Alpharetta Eagles third-grade team.

"Haynes ran on the field screaming and yelling at him," the report said. "(He) got close and starting yelling he was going to kick his a*&."

The report said Haynes was "restrained by other coaches and officials and was removed from the area."

A witness, who didn't want to be identified, told Petchenik the altercation happened after Robinson booted Haynes' third-grade son out of the game for punching another player.

Alpharetta Department of Public Safety spokesman George Gordon told Petchenik the incident report merely documented the situation and that criminal charges wouldn't be filed against Haynes unless someone pressed them.

"We want our coaches and our fans who attend the game to be cordial to the referees and everybody that's there," said Roswell spokeswoman Julie Brechbill. "It sounds like this particular incident got out of hand and it's unfortunate."

Petchenik reached out to Haynes, a one-time member of the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers and a former Atlanta Falcon.

Haynes told Petchenik he was out of town on business and would call him back Tuesday afternoon, but as of this writing, Petchenik had not heard back from Haynes.
