FULTON COUNTY, Ga. - Sandy Springs police are crediting a quick-thinking computer repairman with helping them to solve several theft cases.
Officers arrested Jakil Gray, 18, last week on felony charges after investigators said he tried to sell a stolen laptop to the Microseconds store on Roswell Road.
Technician Derek Faglier told Channel 2's Mike Petchenik that Gray came in late last month with a Dell laptop.
"We quoted him $75 for the laptop," said Faglier, who then ran a diagnostic on the computer to be sure it worked.
Faglier told Petchenik the laptop's hard drive failed an initial test, so he conducted a deeper diagnostic check. That's when he said he came across something suspicious.
"I noticed documentation that looked like internal memos from the CDC, which isn't a normal thing to come through our little store," he said. "Noticed the guy's name on months and months of pay stub information on the machine, was not indicated by the paperwork."
Faglier said he called the company listed on the pay stubs and was eventually able to reach out to the man named on them. Faglier said the man told him someone had broken into his SUV in December while it was parked in midtown Atlanta and had stolen two of his laptops. The victim contacted Sandy Springs Police, who prompted Faglier to call Gray back to tell him his payment was ready.
"I called him, and
said, 'Hey we're gonna close the store kind of early today, so if you want the check, you need to come in soon,'" he said.
When Gray arrived, officers were waiting to arrest him.
"I think he was in shock," said Faglier.
A police report Petchenik obtained said officers found other stolen items in Gray's car, including GPS units, computer hardware and jewelry. Police told Petchenik they're still trying to determine where the items came from and if Gray was involved in their theft.
The Fulton County jail web site indicated that Gray remained behind bars in lieu of a $27,000 bond.
