Rep. John Lewis to speak at 'Atlanta March

ATLANTA — Georgia Rep. John Lewis will speak at the Atlanta March for Social Justice and Women on Saturday, march organizers announced Thursday.

The civil rights leader will join a number of Georgia politicians and civic leaders who will speak out on social justice issues like health care, the environment and LGBTQ rights.

The Atlanta march is one of more than 600 events planned internationally for the day after Donald Trump's inauguration. Cities across the United States are staging marches in conjunction with the Women's March on Washington, which is expected to draw thousands.

The Georgia congressman's addition to the line-up comes a week after a contentious exchange between Lewis and the President-elect. Last week, in a news interview, Lewis said he didn't see Trump as a "legitimate president" and wouldn't attend the inauguration.

Trump hit back at Lewis on Twitter, saying he was "all talk, no action" and calling Lewis' 5th District "falling apart not to mention crime infested."

Saturday’s march will carve a path through the very area of Atlanta that Trump criticized – the 5th District – which includes Centennial Olympic Park, Buckhead and the Beltline. The planned march route is from the Center for Civil and Human Rights to the Georgia State Capitol.

Other scheduled speakers include Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin and U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson. Events start at 1p.m.
