Rental cars becoming sparse at Atlanta airport following outage

ATLANTA — Passengers continue to see major delays and flight cancellations at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport hours after power was restored.

Many are now running into problems using alternate transportation.

Channel 2's Investigative reporter Nicole Carr learned that Enterprise and Alamo car rental companies have sold out of rentals at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

There is no inventory. Now, many of the rental car companies are being forced to ship new cars to cover the dozens of people who decided to drive to their destinations.

One traveler, who had three flight cancellations Sunday night out of Mississippi, said she and her husband had to keep their valuable rental car and drive to Atlanta for a connector flight.

“We’d already rented a car down there and they were like, ‘Well, you’re going to have to keep that or there’s nothing else available.’ So yeah, people are renting cars like crazy left and right,” said traveler Mallie Scott.

“Hopefully they still have our car because apparently, they’re selling out quickly,” said traveler Clay Smith.

Bella Sundar told Channel 2's Dave Huddleston that she was supposed to be in Boston for a graduation and a cruise.

Huddleston met Sundar as she rested her head on a table inside the Atlanta airport, frustrated from the cancelations and delays from Sunday's power outage.

"I got to book another flight because my flight isn't until Wednesday, so I got to book another flight and that flight doesn't leave until 8 p.m.," Sundar said.

Enterprise was telling people to keep checking in on the car status at the airport.
