Heavy rain causes flooding, more rain expected throughout week

Man more than knee deep in flood waters.

ATLANTA — You’ll need your umbrella this week as moisture from the tropics flows into North Georgia.

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brian Monahan said the system will bring showers and storms through the week and into the weekend.

Flash flood watches and warnings have been issued for most of the south metro.

Four to seven inches of rain fell in the south metro area. Rainfall totals reached nearly 5 inches in parts of DeKalb County and Norcross.

Flooding caused issues on the Buford-Spring Connector during the Tuesday afternoon rush hour.

The City of Doraville Police Department issued a traffic alert stating that Oakcliff Road between Northcrest and Pleasantdale Road was temporarily closed due to flooding.

Severe Weather Team 2 meteorologist Brad Nitz said the North Fork of Peachtree Creek is nearing major flood stage in the area where the creek crosses Buford Highway.

An additional 1 to 3 inches of rain is possible by Wednesday morning.

Tropical Storm Cindy has formed in the Gulf of Mexico, and some of that moisture is impacting Georgia. The storm could bring up to 8 inches of rain to parts of Georgia this week.

There is also Tropical Storm Bret near Trinidad and Tobago, but it is not expected to impact Georgia.
