37-year-old man killed in DeKalb County apartment fire

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Firefighters are working to find out what sparked a deadly apartment fire in DeKalb County.

The fire was reported at The Parke on Covington complex on 3970 Covington Highway in Decatur around 6:30 a.m.

Fire Captain Eric Jackson says Tony Hubert, 37, died in the fire. Jackson says Hubert was in a bedroom where officials believe the fire started.

DeKalb County Deputy Fire Chief Norman Augustin said this was one of the most intense fires they've seen lately.

Augustin said a woman leaped from a second story window in the same apartment. The victim's sister says the two were engaged to be married.

We talked with a neighbor who escaped with her 4-year-old son, then tried to help her friends next door.

“I knocked on their balcony door to try to get them out, but didn't nobody come out,” said neighbor Keyera Wade. "I wish we all could have got out. The apartment, that's materialistic. We can get that back. But you know, somebody's life. We'll never be able to get that back."

Fire officials say the woman who jumped complained of some hip pain and is now at Grady Memorial Hospital.

Two teens also got out safely.

The American Red Cross is helping the four displaced families find shelter.
