Public viewing held for Evelyn Lowery

ATLANTA — A public viewing ceremony was held for civil rights and women's empowerment pioneer, Evelyn Lowery.

Lowery, was the wife of civil rights activist Rev. Joseph Lowery, past president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

Evelyn Lowery died Thursday morning at the age of 88 after complications associated with a recent stroke. Lowery founded SCLC/Women, Inc. to focus on empowering women, girls and families. She also created the Drum Major for Justice Awards, held annually in Atlanta.

The view for Lowery was held at the Cascade United Methodist Church in southwest Atlanta. A memorial service is being held Wednesday morning at the International Chapel at Morehouse College.
