Post office honors local Marine killed in Chattanooga military shootings

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A Cobb County post office now has a new name in honor of a fallen Marine.

Lance Cpl. Skip Wells, 21, was killed in an attack on a recruitment center in Chattanooga two years ago.

The post office on Sandy Plains Road is now named the Marine Lance Corporal Squire "Skip" Wells Post Office Building. The name change was unveiled during a special ceremony Monday morning.

Wells went to Sprayberry High School in Marietta. He then went to Georgia Southern and enlisted in the Marines.

Dr. Tom Price, who is now the health and human services secretary under the Trump administration sponsored a bill to rename the post office which then President Barack Obama signed into law.

Channel 2’s Craig Lucie spoke with Wells’ mother about his legacy.

“He was a friend to everybody. Nobody was ever a stranger or left alone; if one kid sitting my themselves at lunch, Skip would sit with them,” said Wells’ mother, Cathy Wells.

Wells was emotional as Secretary Price handed her a copy of the bill at the ceremony.

"I want people to remember what a good kid he was," she said.

Dr. Price's newly elected successor, Karen Handel, said it was an honor to be a part of this special dedication.

"What's most important is what's happening in our communities," Rep. Handel said.

Wells' mother told us she has a request for those who read about this dedication in honor of her Marine.

"Shake (a veteran's) hand, go to the cemetery and say their names so families know their loved ones are not forgotten," she said.
