Possible 'booby trap' investigated as terroristic threat

CARROLL COUNTY, Ga. — Carroll County Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating what appears to have been a booby trap.

Two rows of barbed wire were found strung across Laurel Road, which cuts across a rural area just outside of Carrollton. The narrow road consists of dirt and gravel.

"My heart fell to my feet that someone would go to such an extent to injure another human being," the woman whose car hit the barbed wire said.

She was too afraid to appear on camera and asked us not to use her name.

On Saturday, while driving down Laurel Road in the dark, she came upon the wire.

"Two levels of wire were strung across the road at heights that would have hit someone on a motorcycle or ATV at the chest or neck area. So, trap is a good word. Booby trap is a very interesting word to describe it,” she said.

"We're actually working it as a terroristic threat,” Carroll County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Jeff Richards said.

Richards said he can’t be sure the victim was the actual target.

There have been recent complaints about people riding all-terrain vehicles down Laurel Road, and there might be a connection.

“For some reason, they put it out trying to blockade the road, with the possible intent to hurt somebody," Richards said.

"This wasn't just something laying on the road. This was two levels of barbed wire strung as if it were done on a fence. This was done by someone who knows what they're doing,” the victim said.
