Police: Women rob man after Match.com setup

ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. — Detectives are searching for two women police say used a popular online dating site to lure their victim.

Police say usually these cases come to them from Backpage.com or Craigslist, not Match.com.

The man's car was recovered in a parking lot, but his money is gone and investigators are searching for the female thieves.

Trevor Berry told police he had met a woman on the dating site and agreed to meet at a Rockdale County Country Inn and Suites.

But the meeting, he told detectives, didn't go as planned.

"She opened up the door, let a second female in. The two females robbed him of cash and car keys," said Corp. Michael Camp of the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office.

The two women, police say, were not armed.

"One of the females was described as being over 6 feet tall and was intimidated. He gave up the money and car keys," Camp said.

According to the police report Berry filed - the women ran from the motel room and took off in Berry's 2014 7 Series BMW.

His car was stolen and the robber ditched the car at Cracker Barrel.

The car was recovered, but the women and Berry's $300 were gone. Investigators told Artz they've never had a case like this where the victim was lured on Match.com.

The situation was a surprise for a longtime Match.com user, who says she would recommend it to anyone.

"You have to be skeptical with a lot of the dating websites who you are meeting. I do a background check on all of mine, first and last name, background check on all mine," Match.com customer Kristen Shead said.

This is advice the 45-year-old victim may want to take, as police say Berry has been victimized twice in less than a year.

"I met someone else online through Skype and they extorted him for $500 through Western Union,"  Shead said.

Police are trying to obtain surveillance video for the parking lot and the hotel, which is about a quarter of a mile away.

The women may have gotten away in a smaller-sized passenger car, possibly a rental with Florida tags.
