Police seek link in Craigslist robberies

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - DeKalb County police are trying to determine if the robbers who shot and killed a grandfather are connected to another similar robbery.

Police said Clarence Gardenhire was in town from Florida for the birth of his grandson. Police said a family member agreed to meet a man he contacted through Craigslist.com last week to buy some cellphones for his new business in Buckhead.

The family said Gardenhire and the relative showed up on Shadowridge Drive with $375 in cash just before 11 p.m. last Monday.

“We usually don’t do it late at night, but my brother was trying to help me get the business off the ground,” Norman Lopez said.

The family said Gardenhire was asked to come along because he has a gun permit.

Police said the robber pulled a gun on them, and when Gardenhire reached for his weapon, the robber fired five to 10 rounds, killing Gardenhire.

Chamblee police are investigating another robbery tied to Craigslist. DeKalb County police may compare notes to see if the robberies are related.
