Police: Men crash stolen car, carjack man who stopped to help

Police in Sandy Springs and Doraville are searching for two men who carjacked two cars Sunday night.

An Acworth woman, who asked not to be identified, told Channel 2's Mike Petchenik she was depositing money into an ATM on Roswell Road near Hammond Drive about 10 p.m. when she was the victim of one carjacking.

"I was depositing some money but it wouldn't accept my money. The money got stuck so I had to put my finger in there to get the money out," she said. "Once my card clicked to come out, I heard a door close on the opposite side of the ATM."

That’s when the woman said she saw a masked man rushing towards her car.

“A guy came around to the left side of the ATM and stuck the gun in the window telling me to get out of the car,” she said. “I was just in disbelief.”

The victim told Petchenik she was parked too close to the ATM and couldn’t immediately get out, so another man approached with a gun and put it to her head in an effort to expedite her exit from the car.

“I get out and the passenger hops in the driver’s seat,” she said.

The victim said the men crashed her car into a curb before heading south onto Roswell Road, then onto Interstate 285.

"They didn't know how to drive properly. They didn't know how to get away properly. Didn't know how to conceal their identity properly," she said.

Sandy Springs Police told Petchenik the suspects later crashed the victim’s car on I-285 near Buford Highway.

Doraville police said a good Samaritan stopped to make sure they were OK, and the suspects then stole his car.

"We're reminding people when you go to an ATM, whether a drive-up or a walkup, be aware of your surroundings," said Sgt. Sam Worsham. "Typically criminals will target you if you're not paying attention to what you're doing, where you are, or if you appear not confident in yourself."

The victim told Petchenik she's thankful she wasn't hurt.

"I didn't feel my life was in danger," she said. "I didn't have that feeling or that fear in me for some reason. I was like, 'Let me do what I need to do and just go.'"
