Police search for businessman's killer

ATLANTA — Police are looking for someone who killed a businessman outside his home in southwest Atlanta.

Terry Porter was found dead in his front yard on South Gordon Street. Channel 2's Ryan Young was on the street the next day as a police canvass was under way around 5 p.m. Detectives went door-to-door, asking neighbors about the killing and a vehicle missing from the home.

"We want to make sure justice is served. This is a senseless act by senseless human beings. We need the community to talk. There's too much crime in this neighborhood," Porter's brother, Dwayne, said.

Someone in the neighborhood heard a shot early Monday, but didn't come outside until the next morning to leave for work, police said.

Police believe someone robbed Porter before he was killed. His 2006 black Range Rover with the license plate number BIM 9827 is missing, along with his cellphone. Anyone with information is asked to call Atlanta Crimestoppers at 404-577-8477.

"Mr. Porter owns a couple businesses, including an assisted living facility in DeKalb County, so he really did help out the community, and help out people in need" Atlanta police Detective Summer Benton said.

Dwayne Porter said the loss of his brother is a big blow to the family.

"To take someone who's done so much for the community away from us and our family, it's really, really important for people to step up, for people to talk," he said.
