EAST POINT, Ga. - East Point police arrested a man who they say robbed and killed a well-known restaurant owner.
Police arrested 27 year-old Yusef Abdul Alkarim on Monday night. He's accused of killing Riyadh Nuriddan, 36, of Austell. The shooting happened on July 2.
Investigators say they knew early in the investigation that Alkarim was a suspect.
On July 2, Nuriddan was closing up his popular restaurant, Ikhal’s Superb Seafood on Sylvan Road. Police say that’s when Alkarim shot him in a robbery attempt. They also say Alkarim stole the victim’s pickup truck. It was found 14 miles from the crime scene.
Posted on the door of the restaurant is the suspect's wanted picture, and beside it a note from the family that reads, “Thank you for the help and support.”
Frequenters to Nuriddan’s restaurant told Channel 2’s Dave Huddleston that they are relieved Alkarim is behind bars.
“That has made me happier than I’ve ever been. I’m sick of this, and I’m so glad they finally got him,” said Diane Aldrige of Riverdale.
"It's a burden and a relief not just for the family, but the community,” said longtime family friend Abdul Aleem Muhammad. “It's good in the sense like we were saying: we've got closure.”
Alkarim is charged with murder, armed robbery, false imprisonment, aggravated assault and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.
He is currently at the East Point Jail.
