Police make arrest in SCAD dorm invasion

ATLANTA — Police are crediting Channel 2 Action News viewers in helping to catch the man who police said robbed and tied up two Savannah College Art and Design students.

Investigators said a viewer spotted the man hours after the story originally aired.

Officers said the distinctive tattoo of the Atlanta Falcons logo between the man's eyes also helped in the arrest.

Within 3 hours or airing that newscast I was able to get some really good information," Lt. Jeff Cantin with the Atlanta Police Department told Channel 2's Ryan Young.

Richard Chaney is charged with robbing and tying up two SCAD students last month at the Spring House, a dorm for SCAD students.

"He entered the room. He did take some electrical cords and did bind the hands together of the victim, tying him up. They were unable to leave, they were unable to call for help at the time. That's when he went in and too the electronics of the victims.

Surveillance video showed Chaney and another man inside the main lobby of the building. With the help of the video, police were able to see the distinctive tattoos on Chaney's face that ultimately helped to identify him as the accused robber.

Those tattoos include an Atlanta Falcon's logo between his eyes and a Pac-Man tattoo on his neck.

"Crime Stoppers was a big help with that, because all the phone calls came into Crime Stoppers, or through 911 or into our precinct," Cantin said.

Police are still trying to track down the second man in the surveillance video. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477.
