JONESBORO, Ga. - A Clayton County police officer is injured and one person is dead after a domestic incident Friday night.
Clayton County police said they were called to the area of Tara Boulevard and Upper Riverdale Road at about 10:30 p.m.
Investigators said a man was following a woman in his car, then hit her vehicle with his car, which caused the woman's minivan to hit a Officer Melvin Snell's cruiser.
The woman, who had her children in her minivan, told Snell she was being chased by her estranged husband.
The man then got out of his car and accosted the woman, prompting Snell to intervene, police said.
During a physical altercation between Snell and the man, the man pulled out a gun and shot the officer in the shoulder. A second officer who had arrived during the altercation shot the man, killing him.
Snell was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. He is in serious but stable condition. Small has been on the force for nine months.
